Comparative Study of the Phase Distribution in Carbon-Silica Hybrid Fillers for
Rubber obtained by different lmpreg-nation Technologies
Particulate fillers,or reinforcements,suchas carbon black, clays, and silicas are added to
rubber formulations for rargeted material properties such as tensile strength and abrasion resistance.
Therefore,regarding the formulation,the appropriate choice of afiller is as important as the choice of rubber,so
that a product could realize itsperformance specifications.
During the last years the interest in dual phase hybrid fillers of the type carbon black-silica is growing
up considerably,most of all because of the possibility to combine in them the best properties of the individual
components.
There is a known method to prepare dual phase fillers of the type,,cabonsilica”by the socalled”co-
tuming process”,in which the obtaining of furnace carbon black is carried out in the presence of volatile silicon-
containing che-mical compounds,whereupon a special reactor has been developed for this pur-pose.The dual
phase filler,obtained in this way,contains at least one zone,in which the silicon phase is located outside on the
surface or inside the aggregates of carbon soot.
